Seattle takes its mission to reduce waste seriously, even in the design world. Although high-end local interior designers work with some of the most cutting-edge new technologies and materials, they also make an effort to recycle and re-use objects from the past.
Whether they work with elegant antique furniture, architectural salvage items or wood reclaimed from high school gymnasium floors, the materials impact their projects’ design.
Local establishments such as Earthwise and Second Use in South Seattle and The RE-Store in Ballard foster this creativity by acting as middle men. They purchase re-usable items and materials from construction sites and remodelers and then resell them to builders, designers and other remodelers. Their ever-changing inventories might include a stained-glass window (like the one at right from Earthwise), an antique brass light fixture (from Second Use) or tin panels from The RE-Store.
These operations prove that one man’s castoff is indeed another’s treasure.
